My eldest loves turnip greens, but won’t tough any others. Might be the fact that when she was a baby, I’d put about 1/8 tsp of sugar on hers to get her to eat them. She no longer puts sugar on them, but she sure does love them.
My son, when he was a year old, was at the dinner table in his overalls. He had turnips in each hand, one fat fistful went in his mouth, the other in his “overemhaul” pocket.
I love food that has caused family memories to be made, even if you won’t catch any type of greens near my lips.
Turnip Greens
Serves 6
2 lg bunches turnip greens, rinsed well, stems
removed and cut into bite sized pieces
Lg smoked ham hock or hunk of country ham
1/4 c bacon grease
Pinch Red pepper flakes, optional
~4 c broth, to cover greens
Place all ingredients inside large crockpot.
Cover; cook on low 4 hrs, adding more broth or water as needed to keep greens covered. Don’t worry about adding too much, this will be your “pot likker” later. If greens get dried out some, they will recover from more liquid.
When done, shred meat from hock and discard bone. Return meat to pot.
Serve hot. My family likes them with biscuits.
Can also do this on low on the stovetop for 2+ hours.
