This is my great Granny’s recipe; it is over 100 years old.
Although this is definitely not a “healthy” recipe, I have adapted it to butter (rather than the margarine she used).
This pie has been on every holiday table my entire life. Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and many times in between.
My daughters now have the recipe and make it for their own tables, making this a 5 generation pie.
Chocolate Chess Pie
Serving Size : 16 (2 pies)
Prep time: 15 minutes; Cook time: 1 hour
¼ c cocoa powder
1 stick butter
¼ c milk
1 ½ c sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 lg pie crusts (deep)
Prep work:
-make pie crusts
PH oven to 350°.
Combine cocoa powder, butter and milk in heavy saucepan.
Cook over low heat until butter is melted, whisking constantly until mixture is smooth.
Remove from heat; add sugar, mix well. Make sure you do this before adding eggs, so the eggs don’t cook.
Add eggs and vanilla. Beat well.
Pour into pie crusts.
Bake 45 minutes or until well done; covering edges of pie crust to keep from over browning, if necessary.
