Bull’s Blood Beets (image belongs to Baker’s Creek)

I planted 46 of these beauties the other day.

These are Heirlooms that I purchased at Baker’s Creek. I’ve never grown this particular variety before, but I’m really excited to see my harvest (okay… cart before horse).

Every part of this root vegetable is edible, from the leaves to the beet.

You can even use the leaves as a microgreen. If harvesting as microgreens, you can still grow your beets to full size. Due to the color of this beet, you may get some red color in your food… in fact, this may be a good source of natural food coloring for cookies, Easter eggs, etc… I’ll have to experiment with this.

For the most part, I do not follow seed spacing guidelines, because I love a lush, full garden. Since I don’t grow much in the winter, I have plenty of room so it doesn’t matter if I do or not. However, with that being said, spacing does matter for root vegetables. Since their growing is done underground, they need plenty of space to form good sized vegetables.

I still didn’t follow true to guidelines. I believe you’re supposed to plant 4-6” apart, but have rows 12-18” apart. I planted 4” on center. So basically all my seeds are about 4” by 4” apart.

I used some pelleted seeds that I obtained, just for visibility purposes for this post. If you look very closely, you can see the hot pink seeds.

I will post progress of my Bull’s Blood beet journey. Unless I forget, which is highly likely.
